Writing Tip #1: Read.
Before you begin writing, read.
Why? Because all good writers read.
Reading is your chance to observe. Reading is your time in a classroom of your own design. Reading is your time to study the masters. Take the time to read any and everything. Reading great writing is your opportunity to sit at the knee of writers you admire and glean invaluable knowledge from them. Reading extensively and intensively allows you, as a writer, to actively engage in the art of storytelling. You must know how a story is told before you can tell your own, and reading allows you to see that there are an infinite number of ways to tell a good story. As you read, you'll develop your reader/writer muscles and strengthen your dexterity with words.
Just as you set a goal to write, set a goal to read.
